ROXSTAcube for Tesco in the city center with minimal space requirements

Compact CO₂ solution for a challenging rooftop installation in downtown Birmingham

Central location, narrow access, limited load capacity – for Tesco Birmingham, ROXSTAcube was the ideal solution. Two compact CO₂ units ensure reliable refrigeration with minimal space and weight. Implemented in partnership with Carter Synergy.

Birmingham, England – right in the city center. For a new project commissioned byCarter Synergy, we faced several unique challenges: a very limited installation area, the downtown location, and strict weight restrictions for crane lifting of the refrigeration system.

With our compact CO₂ solution ROXSTAcube, we were able to meet all requirements in the shortest possible time—delivering a perfectly tailored solution for a local Tesco Metro supermarket.

Rooftop installation in the city center – limited space, maximum precision

The supermarket spans the first three floors of a seven-story building. Due to space constraints, the only option for installing the refrigeration system was the roof. The central location added further logistical hurdles: narrow streets, restricted access, and limited crane space.

Tailored solution with reduced weight
Our CO₂ solution ROXSTAcube

During the planning phase, it quickly became clear that this project could only be realized with an especially light and compact system. The challenge: only a small crane with limited load capacity could be positioned close enough to the building to bridge a horizontal reach of 40 meters.

The solution: ROXSTAcube – a series system with reduced weight, under 2,200 kg per unit.

Delivered:

  • 1x MT unit with 48.2 kW (t₀ -7 °C)

  • 1x combined MT & LT unit with 85.3 kW MT (t₀ -7 °C) and 6.9 kW LT (t₀ -34 °C)

The new CO₂ systems replace three outdated F-gas units that had been in operation since 2004.

Teamwork under pressure – despite a winter storm

Installing the new systems required precise coordination. After successfully arranging the road closure and positioning the crane, the team began dismantling the old units—just as the first snowfall of the year began.

Despite the harsh weather, dismantling was completed quickly. Within a week, the new ROXSTAcube systems were installed with the help of a second crane—without a single incident.

To overcome these challenges, we turned to TEKO Kältetechnik—the supplier specified by the customer—who provided expert support in designing the project and quickly delivered two CO₂ rack systems.
